New Zealand Search and Rescue Workshops

The NZSAR Council has directed the Secretariat to run a series of training workshops for the New Zealand SAR sector. Brief descriptions of the workshops are listed below, and all workshop material (presentations, record of workshop) are available from the Workshop Material page. These workshops are limited in size. If you are interested in attending one of these workshops, your first point of contact should be your organisation's national office.

Planned Workshops

The following workshops are planned to be run by the NZSAR Secretariat. 

SAR for People who Wander II

Purpose:

To further improve the conduct, management, and coordination of SAR incidents for people who wander in New Zealand due to some form of incapacity. 

This is a follow up on the Wander workshop held in Auckland, March 2010.

Hoist Operators II

Purpose:

To further discuss common issues related to the operation of SAR helicopters, rescue and recovery techniques, and to identify common procedures and safety issues.

This is a follow up on the Hoist Operators workshop held at RNZAF Base Ohakea in November 2009.

Completed Workshops

The following workshops have been run by the NZSAR Secretariat.

Marine II

Purpose:

To further improve the management and coordination of marine SAR incidents in and around New Zealand. 

This workshop follows on and builds up from the marine SAR workshop that was held in Wellington in May 2010.

Aviation

Purpose:

To further enhance the harmonisation of aviation SAR response by identifying areas for development in SAR Policy and Strategy, SAR Training, SAR Technology and SAR Operations. 

Topics will include the use of FLIR in SAR, mapping and GPS tracking, SAR and Beacon Databases, MEOSAR, Service Level Agreements and crewing for SAR operations.

Training and Education

Purpose:

To share knowledge about SAR training and education techniques and methods. Participants also discussed SAR training developments and anticipated challenges. A planning session for the 2011/2012 SAR calendar was also be included.

Technology Challenge for SAR

Purpose:

To identify and share knowledge about existing, new, and potential technologies that may be applicable to the New Zealand SAR environment. The workshop will focus on future technological trends and note the opportunities and limitations that these technologies represent to the New Zealand SAR community.

On Scene Coordinator

Purpose:

1. To develop an agreed training Syllabus for On Scene Coordinators

2. To develop an outline of a training syllabus for the OSC

3. To agree on core competencies/skills for On Scene Coordinators

4. To develop an understanding of the role of the OSC

5. To agree on the next steps in implementing OSC Training

6. To understand how the OSC relates to CIMS in SAR

Avalanche

Purpose:

To improve the conduct, management and coordination of SAR for avalanche incidents in New Zealand.

Marine SAR

Purpose:
